UJ Scholar Participates in Dialogue on Countering Violent Extremism in Japan

​On March 9, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Jordan's (UJ) Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II School for International Studies, Wisam Fakhry Hazimeh participated in the Sixth Dialogue on Countering Violent Extremism in the Middle East held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Hazimeh along with two participant from Turkey and Morocco, met with State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Yamada Kenji, who stated that Japan shares with Islam a spirit that emphasizes “harmony” and “tolerance", and will continue to contribute to peace and prosperity in the international community, including through countering violent extremism, from the standpoint of having longstanding good relations with countries in the Middle East.

In response, the participants expressed their gratitude for the invitation to Japan; expressing hope to utilize the knowledge gained during the visit in the future, and that Japan play a role in countering violent extremism. They also shared their research findings, exchanged ideas with professors from all over Japan, and shared together the adventure of exploring Japan in depth.

Commenting on his participation in the Dialogue, Hazimeh said: "it was useful for me as a political scientist and certainly opened up broader horizons of thinking for the three of us".

Thanking the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan for this opportunity, Hazimeh said that he had the chance to explore Japan by travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto to Hiroshima, meeting the Foreign Minister. "I thoroughly discussed the meaning of peace and security when I met with His Excellency Ambassador Mihoko Sakamoto while standing at the atomic bomb site in Hiroshima and learning about Japan’s experience and how they rose again afterwards" he added.
