School of Law Concludes Preliminary Round of International Humanitarian Law Moot Court

The University of Jordan’s (UJ) School of Law has concluded the preliminary round of its internal International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot Court Competition, with 50 students from different academic years arguing for the prosecution and the defense.

Designed to deepen practical legal training, the hearings drew vice deans, assistant deans, faculty and staff, along with specialists in international law.

Dean of the School of Law Prof. Basem Mohammad Melhem said the competition underscores UJ’s commitment to linking theory with practice and sharpening students’ skills in research, analysis, and legal writing. He added that the School continues to cultivate a learning environment that rewards rigor and initiative.

Acting Vice Dean for Administrative Quality, International Accreditation and Rankings, and competition supervisor Dr. Ahmad Kabbaha praised the students’ performance, describing the moot as a concrete step toward preparing graduates who can compete in national and international arenas.

Director of the Legal Clinic Dr. Mash’al Jarrah noted that moot courts and legal clinics provide essential hands-on experience that refines advocacy and grounds students in real-world practice. He reaffirmed the School’s commitment to sustaining such initiatives.

Over two days of hearings, eight teams advanced from the preliminary round, with the top teams qualifying for the School’s internal finals. The overall winning team will represent UJ in the National IHL Moot Court Competition, organized in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) later this month, alongside universities from across Jordan.

The competition promotes awareness of IHL principles and builds students’ abilities in case analysis, oral advocacy, and courtroom simulation, in line with the School’s vision to integrate practical training across the curriculum.
