The University of Jordan (UJ) explored new avenues of research cooperation with the Institute for Sustainable Plant Protection of Italy’s National Research Council during an academic visit by Adjunct Prof. Massimo Turina. Throughout the visit, Turina met with Vice President for Accreditation, Global Rankings, and Sustainability Prof. Faleh Sawair to discuss opportunities for joint research, enriched academic exchange, and broader international scientific collaboration.

The visit also included consultations with the Plant Viral Diseases (PlaViDi) Research Group, led by Prof. Nida’ Salem, focusing on ongoing joint research and updates on a newly funded project supported by the Scientific Research and Innovation Support Fund at the Higher Council for Science and Technology. The project investigates mycoviruses and viroid-like elements associated with Fusarium species infecting crops in Jordan.

In addition, Turina met with Dean of the School of Agriculture Prof. Hadeel  Ghazzawi and the School’s honorary professors liaison Prof. Lama Al Banna to discuss broader opportunities in research cooperation and teaching. As part of his visit, he delivered a specialised lecture titled “Viruses for Biocontrol of Pests and Pathogens” to undergraduate students, highlighting emerging biological approaches to pest and disease management.

Recognised internationally for his contributions to plant and fungal virology,  Turina has identified and characterised numerous viruses affecting crops, fungi, and insects. He continues to serve as a senior researcher at IPSP CNR in Italy and as an adjunct professor in the Department of Plant Protection at UJ, reflecting his longstanding association with the University.
