The University of Jordan (UJ) and the Public Security Directorate (PSD) signed a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) today to enhance security and promote societal peace. The agreement was signed by UJ President, Prof. Nathir Obeidat, and the Director of the Public Security Directorate, Major General Dr. Obaidullah Al-Maaitah.

The signing ceremony was attended by the university's vice presidents, and from the Public Security Directorate, Assistant for Operations and Training, Brigadier General Anwar Al-Tarawneh; Director of the Public Security Directorate Office, Brigadier General Nasser Al-Swealmeen; Director of Media and Community Police, Colonel Mahmoud Al-Shayab; Public Security Directorate Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi; and UJ's Director of the Media and Public Relations Unit, Dr. Rakan Abu Orabi.

For his part, Obeidat welcomed this partnership with the Public Security Directorate, which is not new as several previous agreements have been signed with positive results for both parties. He pointed out that the future is bright and secure, and it will continue to improve under the guidance of the Hashemite leadership.

Obeidat highlighted UJ's commitment to maintaining education quality amid challenges by emphasizing creative and innovative teaching in Arabic and English, and preparing students for the global job market. He also revealed that 20% of elective courses are taught by external experts, including experts from the Public Security Directorate, fostering knowledge, experience, and open-minded thinking in an intellectually enriching environment.

During the signing ceremony, Al-Maaitah expressed his pleasure in being at UJ, highlighting the continuity of successful collaborations between the two sides. He emphasized that the MoC aims to contribute to development across various sectors, guided by the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II and the Crown Prince. Al-Maaitah also recognized the university’s role in establishing higher education as a cornerstone of Jordan’s progress, stressing the importance of collective efforts across segments to achieve quality education that enhances social awareness.

Al-Maaitah further highlighted the Public Security Directorate’s commitment to implementing national leadership directives to ensure security against internal and external threats. He noted the Directorate’s extensive presence across the Kingdom, with 137 civil defense centers operating under 17 directorates, providing essential support and assistance to citizens in all regions.

Under the signed agreement, both parties will collaborate in various areas to raise security awareness among UJ's staff and students. The collaboration will focus on awareness of the dangers of drug abuse, traffic awareness, and crime prevention, including cybercrimes, in addition to community violence. The agreement will also emphasize awareness of extremist thought, hate speech, and the activation of community peace clubs established in universities to serve as platforms for activities such as events, courses, and workshops.

The agreement also provides a framework for facilitating academic, research, and knowledge collaboration between the two parties, including organizing scientific and cultural programs, conferences, awareness workshops, and training courses, in addition to exchanging certified trainers and experts available to both parties.

At the end of the signing ceremony, Obeidat presented UJ’s shield to the Director of the Public Security Directorate, while Al-Maaitah reciprocated by presenting the Public Security Directorate’s shield to UJ President. Additionally, handcrafted items created by inmates of rehabilitation and correction centers in the Kingdom were exchanged as tokens of appreciation.
