The University of Jordan (UJ) launched a new research group titled "Spatial Risk Modelling of Natural Hazards", as part of its efforts to advance applied scientific research and respond to the environmental and spatial challenges facing Jordan and the region.

The group focuses on studying natural phenomena that pose serious risks to human life and the environment, to offer practical solutions to mitigate these risks, enhance community resilience, and support sustainable development.

Its work includes developing advanced spatial models and analytical tools to monitor and assess hazards such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides, while combining environmental, geological, demographic, and hydrological analyses in a unified scientific framework. The group will also contribute to sustainable development planning and disaster-response strategies by using remote sensing, geographic information systems, and artificial intelligence, in addition to building knowledge bases that support decision-makers and raise public awareness.

The team brings together experts from the Department of Geography at UJ, including Prof. Ali Alananzeh, Prof. Hussam Al-Bilbisi, Prof. Yusra Al-Husban, Dr. Hind Al-Sarayrah, and Dr. Wissam Al-Hayek. Prof. Mustafa Al-Kuisi joins them from the School of Science, Prof. Khaled Hazaymeh from Yarmouk University, Prof. Iain Stewart from the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom, Dr. Eman Bny Mfarej from the Department of Statistics, and graduate student Maher Al-Shakhanbeh.

This initiative marks an important addition to the university’s research agenda. By encouraging collaboration, engaging with international partners, and producing practical scientific outcomes, the group aims to mitigate the impact of natural disasters, enhance environmental and spatial security, and support national and regional development priorities in line with UJ’s vision of leadership, innovation, and community service.
