The University of Jordan (UJ) participated in an international workshop titled “Adult and Continuing Education in the Development of Individuals and Communities”, organised by the German Adult Education Association, with the participation of academics and experts from Jordan and Germany.

Dean of the School of Educational Sciences, Prof. Muhammad Alzyoud, represented UJ, stressing that adult education is a strategic investment in human capital that drives sustainable development, enhances workforce efficiency, and expands social participation. He noted Jordan’s success in reducing illiteracy from 88 percent in 1952 to less than 5 percent by the end of 2024.

Alzyoud also outlined UJ’s programmes, which combine academic, vocational, and training components in fields such as artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, languages, digital and soft skills, and micro-credentials.

He pointed to challenges, including limited funding and weak outreach in remote areas, highlighting the need for stronger private sector partnerships and flexible national policies that align with digital and green economy priorities.

The workshop, which brought together representatives from the Ministries of Education and Social Development, the Jordan National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, and civil society organisations (CSOs), concluded by calling for adult and continuing education to be integrated into national and academic policies as a pillar of a learning and sustainable society.
