The University of Jordan (UJ) on Wednesday awarded an honorary doctorate in International Relations to Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in recognition of his decades-long contributions to international diplomacy and his efforts in promoting global peace and security.
In his address, UJ President Prof. Nathir Obeidat described the honorary degree as a reflection of the university’s dedication to recognizing global leaders who shape the international landscape. “Josep Borrell's leadership and vision place him among the most influential political figures of our time,” he noted.
During his acceptance speech, Borrell commended Jordan's pivotal role in maintaining regional stability, paying tribute to His Majesty the late King Hussein and His Majesty King Abdullah II for fostering unity and progress through the Hashemite Monarchy. He highlighted Jordan’s steadfast commitment to preserving its sovereignty, promoting social diversity, engaging in regional dialogue, and supporting the Palestinian cause.
Turning to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Borrell emphasized the devastating impact on children, describing the situation as “a war on children and their future,” reflecting upon assessments by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). He called for urgent accountability and greater protection of human rights, stressing the need to counter misinformation and extremism that hinder efforts to build sustainable peace and evidence-based dialogue.
Borrell underscored the strong partnership between the European Union and Jordan, praising their shared vision for stability and growth in a changing global landscape. He also restated the EU’s commitment to ending illegal occupations, stopping violence against civilians, and pursuing impartial accountability as essential steps toward peace. Additionally, he praised Jordan’s leadership in advocating for the two-state solution and fostering international cooperation for peace.
Expressing his gratitude for the honorary doctorate, Borrell remarked, “It is an honor to be here with you today, and I am humbled to receive this honorary doctorate from the University of Jordan.”
Dean of the Prince Al Hussein Bin Abdullah II School of International Studies and Political Science, Prof. Hasan Al Momani, highlighted the pivotal role of His Majesty King Abdullah II and EU leaders, including Dr. Borrell, in strengthening this relationship. He also addressed the pressing challenges of regional instability, particularly the devastating Israeli war on Gaza, stressing Jordan’s active efforts to aid Palestinians and pursue peace, commending Dr. Borrell’s ethical stance on these issues and called for collective action to end the violence and achieve sustainable peace for the region and the world.
Reciting the conferment of the award, Obeidat commended Borrell’s influential role in strengthening strategic ties between Europe and the MENA region, as well as his unwavering support for Palestinian self-determination and his advocacy for resolving the Palestinian cause through international legitimacy and the two-state solution.
Since its establishment 62 years ago, UJ has awarded honorary doctorates to 20 prominent figures, starting with His Majesty the late King Hussein in 1965. The most recent recipient, in 2018, was Ziad Fariz, former governor of the Central Bank of Jordan, in the field of economics.
