Prince Talal Bin Muhammad, representing His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein and in the presence of HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center, honored Dr. Mohammad Abu Faraj from the School of Medicine at The University of Jordan (UJ).
Dr. Abu Faraj was recognized in the "Young Investigator" category for the regional track of the King Hussein Cancer Research Award, launched by King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF).
Alongside Abu Faraj, HRH Prince Talal honored 13 researchers who received the Hussein Cancer Research Award for 2023 and 2024. Launched in 2020, the award aims at empowering cancer research efforts that are taking place within the Arab world, advancing understanding, prevention, and treatment of cancer through innovative scientific approaches. The recipients were selected from 472 participants representing over 20 countries.
For 2024 edition, Dr. Bishoy Faltas from Weill Cornell Medical College in the United States won the award in the international track, while the "Lifetime Achievement" category honored Prof. Mohamed Mehdi from Saint Antoine Hospital in France (international track) and Prof. Randa Hammada from the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain (regional track).
The Promising Researcher grant was awarded to Dr. Ola Thabet from the 57357 Children’s Cancer Hospital in Egypt and Dr. Athari Al-Zaabi from Sultan Qaboos University in Oman.
In 2023, the "Lifetime Achievement" award (international track) was presented to Prof. Dr. Tony Choueiri from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the United States, and in the regional track, to Prof. Dr. Ali Shamseddine from the Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute at the American University of Beirut.
The "Young Investigator" award (international track) went to Prof. Dr. Hatem Abdelazim from Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico, while Dr. Yacoub Youssef from the King Hussein Cancer Center in Jordan won in the regional track.
The Promising Researcher Grant for 2023 was awarded to Dr. Hadeel Halalsheh from the King Hussein Cancer Center in Jordan and Dr. Hiba El Hajj from the American University of Beirut.
Additionally, the award for the "Outstanding Academic Program" was granted to the Hospital Based Health Technology Assessment Program at the King Hussein Cancer Center in Jordan.
The Hussein Cancer Research Award reflects a commitment to advancing cancer research in the Arab world. It honors the legacy of King Hussein Bin Talal, who emphasized the importance of cancer research, and celebrates distinguished Arab researchers in the field, whether they are experts or promising scholars.
The award spans two tracks—regional and international—and includes categories such as "Promising Researcher," "Emerging Researcher," and "Lifetime Achievement."
