Fifth Scientific Day of the School of Medicine: 561 Research Papers Published in 2024, Reflecting a 21% Increase Over Last Year

The University of Jordan (UJ) President, Prof. Nathir Obeidat, inaugurated today the activities of the Fifth Scientific Day of the School of Medicine, in the presence of the university’s vice presidents, deans, vice deans, faculty members, the Director General of the University Hospital, and the families of graduates.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Obeidat stated that the contributions of medical students have placed their school at the forefront of UJ’s schools and among the top medical schools locally and regionally.

He explained that the mandatory requirement for students to publish a research paper, a decision initially surrounded by fear and uncertainty,  has borne fruit, resulting in this scientific day and the substantial outcomes of that change. Currently, the School of Medicine accounts for 30% of all research papers published by the university in indexed international journals.

Obeidat urged students to master global languages, develop digital and soft skills, and uphold professional ethics, emphasising the physician's commitment to excellence and a new philosophy in the practice of medicine. He also stressed that medicine remains a noble mission for all nations.

For his part, Dean of the School of Medicine, Prof. Ayman Wahbeh, stated: "Faculty members of the School of Medicine published 561 research papers in 2024, reflecting a 21% increase compared to last year, thanks to an encouraging academic environment and the continuous support of the university’s administration."

Wahbeh noted that medical students submitted 196 research projects, including 53 published papers, 10 accepted for publication, and the remainder under review, indicating the high-quality outpuand a growing research spirit among the current generation.

Assistant Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs, Dr. Marzouq Amarin, said: "The research output of the medical students demonstrates that the School has produced a generation that not only acquires knowledge but also participates in its production, development, and direction toward serving patients and society."

He underscored the School's ongoing and intense efforts to enhance and elevate the value of scientific research, not only as an academic requirement, but as a means for deeper understanding, critical thinking, and genuine readiness for evidence-based medicine, aiming to graduate a new generation capable of carrying the mission of medicine to the world.

Following the opening ceremony, Odeibat presented honorary shields to the students with the highest number of research publications, to the faculty members and student organisers, and several staff members of the school.

The Scientific Day included several sessions during which student research projects were discussed. Outstanding research papers were honoured after being evaluated by the School’s faculty members.
