'New Technologies in Translation and Interpreting' Research Group Launched

As part of its efforts to enhance scientific research in translation and its modern technologies, the University of Jordan (UJ) has announced the launch of a specialized research group titled "New Technologies in Translation and Interpreting." The group aims to explore, develop, and promote the integration of cutting-edge technologies in translation and interpreting while addressing the evolving challenges and opportunities in multilingual communication..

The group is interested in analyzing the effectiveness of AI models, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, in translating complex texts while considering cultural nuances, idiomatic expressions, and specialized terminology. They also seek to assess the performance of neural machine translation (NMT) systems in the English-Arabic language pair, focusing on their ability to handle linguistic, contextual, and pragmatic challenges.

Additionally, they aim to compare NMT outputs with human translations in terms of accuracy, fluency, and the preservation of meaning. Our research also evaluates the impact of Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools on human translators, examining their effects on translator productivity, job satisfaction, and overall translation quality.

The group includes a distinguished team of academics and experts in translation and modern translation technologies, including Dr. Hanan Al-Jabri, Sukayna Ali, and Dr. Areej Al-Louzi from the Department of English at the University of Jordan; Dr. Amer Al-Adwan from Hamad Bin Khalifa University; Dr. Athil Farhan from Al-Mustansiriyah University; Dr. Abdullah Abushmaes, Head of the Research and Language Studies Unit at the Abu Dhabi Center for Arabic Language; Nissreen Issa, a translator and researcher at Ernst & Young; and Farah Jarrah, a postgraduate student.
