University of Jordan Launches Research Group on Groundwater Management

As part of its efforts to enhance scientific research and environmental sustainability, the University of Jordan (UJ) has announced the launch of an collaborative research group specializing in Groundwater Resources Management.

The group brings together a distinguished team of researchers from both Jordan and abroad, aiming to conduct advanced research, develops innovative strategies for groundwater protection, and ensure its sustainability amid increasing environmental challenges and climate change. This initiative contributes to achieving water security and supporting sustainable development.

The group includes researchers from various universities and institutions, among them Dr. Sharifa Hind Mohammed from the Water, Energy, and Environment Center at the University of Jordan; Prof. Claudia Messina from the University of Pavia, Italy; Prof. Rod Fincham from the University of Queensland, Australia; Dr. Khaldoun Shatnawi from the School of Engineering at the University of Jordan; Dr. Khitam Al Zughoul from the School of Science at the University of Jordan; Dr. Taleb Ouda from the Hashemite University; Engineer Thair Momani from the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation; and Ihab Alazzam, a PhD student at Aix-Marseille University, France.

The group's research focuses on studying groundwater flow dynamics, assessing the impact of human activities on water quality, developing digital models for water resource management, analyzing the effects of climate change on groundwater, and advancing water harvesting technologies and adaptation strategies for water scarcity. Moreover, the group explores methods for reusing treated wastewater, minimizing the environmental impact of extraction and consumption processes, and enhancing groundwater recharge.
