The University of Jordan (UJ) hospital has successfully performed its first-ever transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation (TPVI), marking a major milestone in the institution’s advancement in complex cardiac care. The procedure was performed on a young woman suffering from severe pulmonary valve regurgitation.
The intervention was led by a highly specialised team, including Senior Consultant in Pediatric Cardiology Prof. Iyad Al-Omari; Consultant in Cardiology and Interventional Catheterisation Dr. Kais Al Balbissi; and visiting professor from the United States, Prof. Ziyad M. Hijazi, a global expert in congenital heart defects and honorary professor at UJ. They were supported by a dedicated team of nurses and technicians specialised in cardiac catheterisation.
The minimally invasive procedure involved implanting a new pulmonary valve using catheter-based techniques, eliminating the need for open-heart surgery. This cutting-edge approach represents a qualitative leap in the treatment of congenital heart disease, particularly in patients requiring complex structural interventions.
The patient’s condition had led to significant enlargement and impaired function of the right ventricle, necessitating this precise and innovative procedure.
This achievement highlights the hospital’s advanced capabilities in specialised healthcare and reaffirms its commitment to adopting international best practices in interventional medicine.
